Fishing In Hampshire

As you might expect from such a large county, fishing in Hampshire takes many, many forms, shapes and sizes, encompassing innumerable river stretches, lakes, ponds, and sea angling.

Greenridge Farm Coarse Fishery, for example, is possibly the South of England's most prolific fishing complexes, a day ticket water, Greenridge Farm consists of four canals and a specimen lake nestled in a lusciously green farm near the enchanting Hampshire town of Romsey.

The specimen lake is bursting with thriving, double-figure fish and the canals, which host a variety of professional and non-pro matches, are brimful of 18lb carp, roach, rudd, tench, perch and some ornamentals. Day sessions can result in bags weighing over 100 lbs. To date the record fish is a 28lb common.

The Farnborough and District Angling Society (FADAS for short) alone gives a good flavour of just how varied fishing in Hampshire can be. Presiding over three generous gravel pits at the Hollybush complex, the society also controls the two beautiful Shawfields Lakes.

Set in a sleepy corner of Ash next to the River Blackwater, the lakes are brimming with carp, crucians, bream, roach and perch. In addition, FADAS controls two and a half miles of the River Loddon at Winnersh; a prime gravel river, you'll be able to enjoy some superb fishing all the year round here. Some 16lb Barbel have been drawn from this stretch of water, and there are also Bleak, Dace, Gudgeon, Perch, Pike and Roach to be had, along with the occasional Trout.

As if this was not enough, the society also controls three miles of the River Whitewater at Heckfield. This delightful chalk stream is home to chub, dace and roach and is an excellent water to fish in the winter. As the society is affiliated to the Surrey and Hants Basingstoke Canal Angling Association, it offers more than 30 miles of marvellous canal fishing stretching from Greywell Tunnel to the River Wey. Many thousands of fish have been introduced into these idyllic canal waters over the years (membership of FADAS grants you free fishing at this venue).

As one of the county's borders runs along the coast, Fishing In Hampshire also includes sea angling. The Christchurch and District Fishing Club offers sea fishing from the beaches of Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole.

Hampshire also includes the Isle of Wight, though, and some excellent sea angling is available there, too, including the selection of sea trips from Ventnor (on the south side of the Isle) offered by the Ocean Blue Sea Charters company.

These trips range from mid-channel wrecks to nearby plaice grounds, courtesy of a beautiful (and fabulously stable) 8.5 Cheetah Catamaran. Fishing in Hampshire is as diverse as it is abundant; this county could deservedly be called Angler's Heaven.
