A Guide To Fishing In Staffordshire
Anglers are a pretty diverse group once you start getting up close. Some like to sit sedately by a small pool, dreamily fishing for a little tench, whilst others love standing waist deep in fast flowing waters trying to land a hard fighting river beast. Yet others set their pulse rates racing in competitive matches. Whichever category your style of angling falls under, you'll find plenty of venues to practise your craft when fishing in Staffordshire.
Blithfield Anglers is Staffordshire's premium trout fishery on Blithfield Reservoir. Located next to the picturesque village of Abbot's Bromley, it's situated deep in the heart of rural Staffordshire and is surrounded by gorgeous countryside.
Offering superb fishing either from its enormous eleven miles of bank or on the water itself (there's a fleet of 30 powered boats to choose from) Blithfield is a 'must try' venue and a great introduction to fishing in Staffordshire. You can take out annual membership or simply pitch up as a day visitor (but be advised that you'll get better offers as a member, such as a more generous catch limit and discounted boat hire).
If the idea of coarse fishing from four beautiful pools surrounded by 500 acres of grass and arable farmland appeals to you, head for the historic village of Penkridge and, just off the B5012 you'll find Pillaton Hall Farm Pools (Pillaton Pools for short), blithely overlooking the gorgeous Cannock Chase.
You'll find a variety of species here, from 1 inch skimmer bream to thumping great 20 lb carp. There are also plenty of roach, rudd, perch and tench. The pools are open from dawn to dusk with the best fishing tending to occur early in the morning or in the evening. Adults and children are welcome 365 days a year, although children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
In Stafford itself sits an amazing coarse fishery, which is fast achieving the status of one of the very best match and pleasure venues in the country.
Heronbrook Fisheries lies amidst 10 acres of luscious Staffordshire countryside near to the village of Eccleshall. Easily accessible to disabled anglers, all four of the beautiful pools at Heronbrook were specially designed by owner Neil Dale, who brought his forty years of angling experience to bear on this project. Two of the pools alone (Canal and Bridge) boast more than a hundred purpose built platforms.
So far we've been looking at selected venues in South Staffs, but there's more to fishing in Staffordshire than this. In the north of the county lies a superb coarse and game fishery comprising 14 lakes, four of which are trout waters spanning 6 acres.
Hanchurch Fisheries, near Stoke-on-Trent, offers both annual membership and day tickets, and the trout waters are stocked every week on a put-and-take basis with a base weight of 2lbs.
Take a foray into the Staffordshire Moorlands and you'll come across the Victoria and Biddulph Angling Society. An excellent coarse fishery run by exceptionally hard-working volunteers and enthusiasts, the society offers 8 waters, 6 of which are within Biddulph itself with the other two only slightly further afield.
