A Guide To Fishing In Rutland

An angler who fancies hooking some salmon might try paying a visit to Palm Springs. No, not the Hollywood one, you'll be fishing in Rutland instead, England's smallest and oldest county. Palm Springs Fishery is located in the verdant countryside of Greetham Valley; a beautiful, specially designed spring-fed salmon lake spanning one acre and reaching a depth of up to 20 feet, you can expect to catch some glorious Salmon here. The venue operates a catch and release policy, but you'll be allowed to keep one salmon. The pool is deliciously cool in the summer and wonderfully warm in the winter and is stocked with 2,000 salmon every year. You can also take breakfast, lunch or evening meal in style at the nearby Greetham Valley Hotel.

Anyone who doubts that they're in for a great day's fishing in Rutland should take a trip to the Northern edge of Rutland Water, the largest and finest trout lake not only in Britain but in Europe. Here, from its delightful lakeside lodge, you can try out Rutland Fly Fishing Adventures. Rutland Water has a stunning 26 miles of shoreline and spans a colossal 3,500 acres (it's the biggest man made lake in Europe). The brown and rainbow Trout are turbo-charged hard fighters, but the fishery also aims to encourage beginners, offering superb introductory courses on fly fishing for individuals and groups. The setting is simply breathtaking, and doing battle with those trout will certainly leave you breathless. A day at Rutland water is almost certainly not going to be enough. Why not try a short family fishing break there with a stay at The Lodge, Barnsdale? Perched right on the waters edge with jaw dropping views of the sun setting over the bay every evening, you're literally a step or two from the fish. And you probably won't want to leave.

In Stretton near Oakland, you'll discover another fine reason to go fishing in Rutland, in the form of the gorgeous Stretton lakes. Set in 120 acres of farmland deep in the Northern English countryside, these four lovely lakes and bursting with coarse fish. You can purchase day tickets on site, but you might want to take the family on a short fishing holiday here; the fishery boasts three luxury four-star round log cabins.

Also near Oakland, in the picturesque setting of Whissendine, you'll find Homeclose Fishery: all four of its lakes are reed lined, studded with lily beds and surrounded by overhanging willow trees. For the pleasure fisherman who adheres to traditional fishing values, this is angling heaven. Each lake has a reed bed filter and positively teems with healthy, fin-perfect fish. Whether you like tench fishing at dawn or carp fishing from the margins on a warm afternoon, this fishery is not to be missed.

A Guide To Fishing In Rutland combines spectacular beauty with some of the very best angling experiences to be had in the UK, an angling must.
