When you're looking for where to buy a rod license in the UK, one doesn't often have to go very far. They are available at many places other than the local chapter of the Environment Agency, often very close to your favourite fishing waters. Whether you're looking for a single day license or one that's good for the whole year, the EA makes it simple for anyone to comply with the law.
Anyone over the age of 12 who wishes to legally fish on UK waters, whether they be rivers, streams, ponds, canals or lakes, must have a rod license. There are no exceptions, even if you're not a UK citizen. There are two general types of license, one for river trout and salmon and one for course fish and lake trout.
Most waters are regularly patrolled, and the odds are pretty good that you'll be asked to show proof of your rod license at some point during the year. To be caught fishing without a rod license may be persecuted as a poacher and the penalties can be rather steep – the current penalty for a first offence is a fine of £2,500. At the very least, you'll have your catch confiscated and get a very stern warning. Saying that you didn't know where to buy a rod license won't carry very much weight.
If you're going to be using more than two rods at a time, you must purchase two licenses, no matter what type of fish you're angling for. This applies almost exclusively to coarse fish rod licenses, as fly fishing is all but impossible for more than one road at a time.
The former is considerably more expensive, costing nearly three times as much as the coarse fish rod license. Regardless, there's little quarter given to those who claim they can't afford one, either. For instance, junior rod licenses for those between the ages of 12 and 16 (when they purchase the license) cost only £5 for the entire year. Half-priced concessionary licenses are available to the aged and disabled at the same locations.
Whether you purchase a single day, 8-day or full year license, they all expire on 31 May, with the next year's license period beginning on 1 April. The biggest development in where to buy a rod license in recent years has been the ability to purchase one using your credit card over the Internet. In addition to this, the EA makes it easy to find where to buy a rod license by having them available at every single post office in England and Wales.
