A Guide To Fishing In Somerset

A Guide To Fishing In Somerset
Entering Somerset sometimes makes you feel that you’ve passed through a timeslip; with mile after mile of ancient, unspoiled landscapes and verdant countryside, you could easily be forgiven for thinking that you’d suddenly stepped back a couple of centuries.
Exmoor, the Somerset Levels, the Quantock Hills – all convey a world in which speeding traffic, overcrammed schedules and pulsating stress simply don’t exist. And if you go fishing in Somerset, any residue of urban stress still flickering in your system will dissolve in moments. This county has more coarse fisheries than you could shake a trout at.
Combining the best of rural, coastal and countryside scenery, Bullock Farm Fishing Lakes were voted one of the ‘50 fisheries you must fish’ by Angling Mail and were in the top 100 fisheries nationwide featured in the Angling Times.
Located in the charming village of Kingston Seymour (regularly voted North Somerset’s Best kept Village), Bullock Farm boasts five beautiful lakes with a total of 143 swims, including a specimen carp lake. The lakes are heavily stocked with fine coarse fish, and the site includes a 2.5 acre campsite and two 300 year old barn conversion holiday cottages. This is one good way to fall in love with fishing in Somerset.
A sojourn to the Somerset Levels will bring you to the sleepy village of West Huntspill near Highbridge, where you’ll discover possibly one of the best coarse fisheries in South Western England – Emerald Pool Fishery.
Set in eight acres of ravishing Somerset countryside, this fishery is a family run business with superb all year round fishing. Emerald Pool itself is a 1.5 acre lake richly stocked with multifarious carp – you’ll find commons, ghosties, mirrors, leathers and koi galore here. The carp have plenty of healthy barbel, bream, roach, rudd and tench for neighbours in this water.
Sapphire Pool boasts five islands and 20 pegs and has the same fish as Emerald minus the barbel. The 20 peg Ruby Pool is the newest and, with its abundant pugnacious carp, is ideal for matches. Finally, there’s Jade Pool – but please, no bags or nets: all fish are returned in this pool.
Fishing in Somerset is not just about still water angling, though. The Glaston Manor Angling Association controls numerous waters in the Glastonbury and mid-Somerset area, but it regards the jewel in its crown as the River Brue.
This lovely river provides possibly the best bream, chub, pike and roach fishing in the county. You’ll be spoilt for choice by the sheer number of tributaries and millstreams emerging as the river flows from Lydford on Fosse to Westhay.
You could even try your hand at a little sea fishing from the Somerset Coast. Bristol Chanel Angling, for instance, offers charter boats, which fish the waters of the stunning northern coastline of West Somerset.
