A Guide To Fishing In Devon
Fancy a stay in a genuine fisherman’s hotel deep in the most naturally bejewelled Devonshire countryside? If so, it’s time to check in to the extraordinary Arundel Arms Hotel – one of Britain’s foremost fishing hotels for the last two decades.

Fishing in Devon can be a truly luxurious experience as well as a stunningly natural one. Controlling a whopping 20 miles of the River Tamar (and no less than six of its tributaries), you can spend your angling day in the most bucolically splendid isolation, fishing for the notoriously shy brown trout.

These beautiful waters are spate rivers, rising on the moors and descending to the valleys below, traversing farm and woodland as they fall, mutating in size and flow on their journey. They dilate, growing deeper and broader as they flow downward, creating long slow pools and gravelly runs, open glides and fast shallows along the way. By late spring, as well as the brown trout, you’ll be fishing for salmon, too.

The Arundel Arms also runs courses for novice anglers and sells a superb array of tackle. And, at the end of the day, you can celebrate your angling conquests with a gourmet meal in the magnificent restaurant.

Those who like the idea of foraging for fish deeper in the county might like the look of the Tavistock Trout Fishery. A short break at this fishery brings you fishing in Devon at its unvarnished best. Situated on the edge of the hauntingly beautiful Dartmoor National Park, this beautifully located fishery is teaming with rainbow and brown trout as well as salmon in its five superb lakes, and the price of a stay includes lunch and evening meals at the excellent ‘Trout ‘n’ Tipple’ pub next to the waters (starters, drinks and puddings not included).

Fishing in Devon will take you to the gateway to Exmoor – and to the magnificent Oaktree Specimen Carp and Coarse Fishery with its jaw-dropping views of Exmoors National Park, North Devon.

Veteran anglers will be delighted but even a rookie can expect to land a hefty bag of fish at the first effort. Boasting an excellent specimen lake and two match lakes, all Oaktree’s waters are richly stocked with Common, Mirror, Leather, Ghost, Koi and Crucian Carp, as well as Tench, Bream and Perch.

This specially created fishery covers 30 acres and there are excellent accommodation options available, from caravanning, to bed and breakfast to luxury self catering cottages.

Or take a look at the 18th century spring-fed waters of Creedy Lakes, stuffed with some of the hardest-fighting Carp in the whole of Devon. Teaming with immaculate Common Carps (up to 31 lbs) and impressive Mirror and Koi, it also hosts oodles of Golden and Green Tench. The fact that many anglers travel long hours to get a single day’s fishing here in tells you that this is one of the very best day ticket angling venues in the Southwest.
